Ian Fleming went on at some length to give readers a glimpse into the mind of James Bond as he sized up the character of Sir Hugo Drax in Moonraker. Drax himself is, in fact, one of the most richly detailed villians of the original 007 canon.
Chapter 4 reads: "Bond concluded his inspection with Drax's clothes which were expensive and in excellent taste - a dark blue pinstripe in lightweight flannel, double-breasted with turnback cuffs, a heavy white silk shirt with a stiff collar, an unobtrusive tie with a small grey and white check, modest cuff-links, which looked like Cartier, and a plain gold Patek Philippe watch with a black leather strap."
Pure Fleming; fantastic close on the timepiece.
Well, except to one reader who appears to have held a particular bent toward horology. Without naming names, author Henry Chancellor has identified the following criticism of Ian Fleming's watch selection for Drax in Moonraker, as excerpted from a fan letter.
"As you appear to be a perfectionist, whether it is wine, cars, gambling, food etc., it might interest you to know that the most exclusive watch in the world is the Audemars-Piquet."
Irrespective of what Mr. Fleming may have known at the time of writing Moonraker, it seems to me an even more important point here that he was engaged in this sort of question after the publication of his third novel, and that this nuanced detail was important enough to him to have preserved for future reference.
